The Georgian Quarter, within the North Bar can be busy and the traffic noisy. Tourists often visit St. Marys, walk down to the North Bar and buy something to eat and drink. The Coronation Garden with its imposing iron gates, made locally in the 19th Century, is often overlooked. It shouldnt be. It is a tranquil gem, an oasis of calm that illustrates just what can be achieved when local councils, committees and societies work together to create something special. The garden is well maintained and deceptively larger that you perhaps expect. The original Georgian town houses were long-since demolished and the area then used as parish and private burial grounds before they became the garden commemorating the coronation of Elizabeth II. More recently, both in 2005 in and 2013, the garden was redeveloped and regenerated. In 2005 a wonderful sensory garden for all seasons was created particularly for the disable. In 2013, further work was completed to mark the 60th anniversary of the coronation. If you want to chill this garden is the place. It is perfect for relaxing a while and for enjoying something to eat or drink. There is abundant seating, many of the benches having been privately donated in remembrance of loved ones. The tombstones have not been removed from the site but have been placed around the walls. If you want a glimpse of Victorian Beverley read and inspect them! I love the paintings that are scattered around the heart of Beverley and there are two in the garden to enjoy. The planting is a delight and the colours on a late October day wonderous. Dont miss the far end which is, in effect a hidden garden
